Bright Houses on the Harbourside, Polperro, Cornwall

I recently spent some time looking at the lovely harbour at Polperro in Cornwall. It is such a pretty place with many white houses built on the hills. I wanted to show the bright light hitting the walls of the buildings. The village is full of character and it is a great spot for any artist to visit. I love how the buildings look like they are piled on top of each other.

The green trees on the hill behind the village make the white paint look even brighter. For the trees, I used some viridian green and a bit of bright spring green. I tried to keep the brush strokes loose and fast. This helps to show the texture of the woods without painting every single leaf. It provides a nice dark background for the light buildings in the front.

The water in the harbour has many different shades. I used some cobalt blue and a little bit of cerulean blue for the clear parts. I also added some green into the water to show the depth. The reflections of the houses and boats are very important. They help the viewer understand that the water is moving just a little bit.

I chose to paint the boats with some bright colours. I used some cadmium red and ultramarine blue for the small details on the boats. These little bits of colour help to draw your eye into the middle of the painting. Painting boats can be tricky but if you look at the basic shapes it becomes much easier. I like how the red pops against the cool blue of the sea.

This painting is currently for sale. If you would like to buy it or if you want more information about it please contact me. I can give you all the details about the paper I used and the size of the work. It would look very nice in a frame on a sunny wall. I always enjoy sharing my work with other people who love the seaside.
