Brixham Harbour #6

Brixham Harbour #6

The lovely harbour at Brixham in Devon. It is such a wonderful place for any artist because there is always something interesting to see. The water was calm and I wanted to capture that bright morning light hitting the boats. I really enjoyed working on the reflections in the water and the simple shapes of the buildings on the side. It is a great spot to practice how light and shadow work together.

For this painting, I focused on using some nice blue tones. I used plenty of Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue for the sky and the sea. To make the shadows look deep and rich, I mixed in some Neutral Tint and Burnt Umber. I also added some bright pops of Alizarin Crimson and Cadmium Yellow on the boats to make them stand out. The contrast between the cool blues and the warm reds really helps the painting feel alive.

I love how the small boat in the front leads your eye into the rest of the scene. When I paint harbours, I try not to add too much detail. I like to keep the brushwork loose and fast so the painting feels fresh. It is all about capturing the feeling of the place rather than every single rope or window. This style is very fun to do once you get used to letting the water do the work.

This original watercolor painting is now for sale. If you would like to own this piece or want to know more about it, please contact me for more information. I always happy to chat about my work and help you find the right painting for your home.
