Painting Clovelly Harbour at low tide in Watercolour
Share
I always enjoy painting Clovelly Harbour. It is such a lovely place with strong light, big shadows and old fishing boats resting on the shore. In this painting I wanted to capture that calm feeling you get at low tide. The white boat in the foreground was my main focus. I used simple warm browns and cool blues to make it stand out against the wet ground. A touch of bright red on the buoy gives a nice bit of contrast.
The harbour wall on the left gave me a chance to play with burnt sienna and ultramarine blue to create those deep, dark shapes. I kept the brush marks loose so the scene feels alive. The distant hills were a soft mix of cobalt blue and a little green, fading into the light. I like how the light hits the water and pulls your eye into the distance. It helps give the painting depth and a peaceful mood.
The figure walking with a dog adds a small story to the scene. It shows the quiet life you often see in these little fishing villages. I did not add many details. I wanted the shapes to stay simple so they do not take attention away from the boats. The whole painting is about strong light, simple shapes and a feeling of being by the sea.
