Trevone Beach, Cornwall
Share
The rugged cliffs at Trevone always catch my eye with their sharp edges and deep shadows. I wanted to show the rough texture of the rocks on the left side of the beach. To do this, I used some dry brush strokes and a mix of neutral tint and cobalt blue. The dark shapes of the cliffs help the bright sand look even warmer and more inviting. It is a great way to make the painting feel solid and real.
The beach was full of life with people walking near the water. I painted the figures quickly with just a few strokes of alizarin crimson and ultramarine blue. This keeps the scene feeling fresh and moving. The shallow pools of water on the sand were perfect for adding reflections. I used very thin washes of cerulean blue and a touch of lavender to show the sky bouncing off the wet ground. It adds a nice sense of depth to the foreground.
I chose a simple palette of colours to keep the mood calm. The yellow ochre for the sand works well against the cooler blues of the sea. In the distance, the headland is a soft mix of cobalt green and grey to show it is far away. The white paint for highlights helps the waves look like they are breaking on the shore. I hope this painting brings a bit of the seaside into your home.
