A Walk Through Stub State Park, Oregon

A Walk Through Stub State Park, Oregon

Here is my latest watercolour of Stub State Park in Oregon. I really enjoyed painting this peaceful, shady forest scene. There is something special about the way the sunlight filters through those tall trees and lights up the pathway ahead. I wanted to capture that lovely mix of dark trunks, rich greens, and dappled light.

For this painting, I used a combination of ultramarine blue and viridian green to build up the cool shadows and lush greenery. To create the warmth of the earth and paths, I turned to burnt sienna and a touch of yellow ochre. I also added dabs of white paint for highlights on the ferns and bright spots of sunlight. The figure walking along the trail adds a sense of adventure and invites you to imagine wandering through the woods yourself.

Stub State Park is full of inspiration for watercolour painters. All those layers of leaves and changing greens make it a perfect study for practicing wet in wet techniques and brushwork. I find that focusing on shapes, rather than details, helps to create a more lively and fresh painting.
