Basin Road near The Jolly Sailor pub at Heybridge Basin

I painted this scene at Heybridge Basin, looking down Basin Road just past The Jolly Sailor pub. It’s one of those peaceful places where you get a lovely mix of river, buildings, and a bit of life along the street. I really enjoyed working with warm reds and burnt sienna for the roof and brickwork, alongside rich greens for the hedge and trees. It gives a lively contrast that brings out the feeling of a sunny day.
The light in this painting was key for me. Shadows and highlights help set the time of day and add interest. If you look closely, you’ll spot how I’ve used cerulean blue and ultramarine to shape the sky and add reflections on the road. There’s a gentle movement with a few figures walking, which I always think adds a local story to the painting.
I kept my brushwork quick and loose, especially on tree foliage and the brick wall. This helps the painting feel fresh and natural.
