Bluebell Walk

Spring woods are full of deep greens and soft purple shadows that catch the light in wonderful ways. When I painted Bluebell Walk, my main focus was to capture the warm sunlight hitting the big central tree while keeping the bluebell carpet fresh and loose. It is always a fun challenge to balance very bright greens with gentle blues without making the scene look too harsh or messy.

To get the cool purple tones of the flowers, I mixed lavender and ultramarine blue across the foreground. I did not try to paint every single bluebell flower with a tiny brush. Instead, I painted soft washes onto damp paper, letting the pigments flow together smoothly. For the vibrant green leaves at the top, a mix of yellow ochre and bright spring green helped me show the warm spring sun shining through the leafy branches.

Shadows are great for creating depth in woodland scenes. I used dark neutral tint and burnt umber under the thick branches to make the bright leaves pop out forward. A few touches of light red and cobalt blue in the distance help push the background trees far away. Adding two simple figures walking down the path helps give the whole landscape a sense of real scale and movement.
