Castel Vecchio di Compito, Tuscany

Castel Vecchio di Compito, Tuscany

Tuscany is famous for its warm sunlight and rolling hills, but a stormy sky can create even more excitement in a landscape painting. In this piece, titled Castel Vecchio di Compito, I wanted to capture the contrast between the dark, rainy clouds and the bright green hillsides below. A dramatic sky gives any scene a sense of energy and mood that simple blue skies just cannot match.

To make the dark sky work, I used a blend of ultramarine blue, neutral tint, and a touch of burnt umber. I painted this wash wet on wet so the colours would blend smoothly and form soft cloud shapes. While the sky was still damp, I let some areas stay lighter to suggest breaks in the heavy clouds where light tries to peak through.

For the bright trees and foliage on the hillside, I mixed yellow ochre with spring green and viridian green. Putting these fresh, warm greens directly under a dark sky makes the hillside pop. The red dome on top of the hilltop village creates a nice focal point, and I used cadmium red and burnt sienna to paint those terracotta roofs.

I also added a small figure walking along the quiet country road at the bottom. Adding a person gives the viewer a sense of scale and makes the scene feel alive. A few small touches of white paint were added at the end for clean highlights along the road and buildings.
