Church of Santa Maria from Riba Pitxot, Cadaqués

Here is a fresh demo of the Church of Santa Maria seen from Riba Pitxot in Cadaqués, Girona. I love this view as the white church sits high over the bay and the little roofs step down the hill. The day felt heavy with a stormy sky, which helps the light walls shine. It is a classic Mediterranean scene and perfect for a simple value plan.
I began with a wet in wet sky using ultramarine with a touch of neutral tint for a moody grey. While damp I dropped in soft clouds and let them merge into the distant roofs. I kept the church bright by saving the paper and added warm tiles with light red and burnt sienna. The trees were a lively mix of cool greens to break the whites.
On the left I painted a strong dark wall in cool blues and greys to frame the light centre. Shadows were a mix of ultramarine and burnt umber, with some dry brush for the rough street and balconies. I suggested a parked car, the zebra crossing and a few reflections with quick horizontal strokes. Two simple figures add scale and give a gentle story of people walking by the water.
My tips for this subject are simple. Think big shapes first and keep edges varied. Let warms in the roofs play against the cool street and sky. Keep details to the end and place just a few accents and tiny touches of white for sparkle. If this scene appeals, join one of my live demos or workshops and paint along next time.
