Winter Stream, Somes Pond, Maine

Winter Stream, Somes Pond, Maine

Here is a new painting I have finished. It is called 'Winter Stream, Somes Pond, Maine'. I really like this one. It shows a snowy scene with a little stream and a fox walking across the snow. It is a cold day, but the fox looks warm in its bright orange fur. I wanted to capture that feeling of a very cold, bright winter's day when the sun is low in the sky.

The main colours I used here are blues and violets for the snow and shadows. I used neutral tint with some ultramarine blue to get the dark, cold shadows on the snow. I also used lavender colour, which is a lovely soft purple, for some of the lighter shadows. For the trees and the background, I used burnt umber and a bit of burnt sienna, which are warm browns. This helps the cold blue and white snow stand out even more.

The fox is the star of the show, isn't he? I used light red and cadmium yellow to get that bright orange-red colour. It's a lovely contrast to all the cool blues and white snow. I put the dark details on the fox with a little neutral tint. It is important in a scene like this to have those dark and light contrasts to make the painting exciting.

I hope you enjoy seeing this winter scene. Painting snow and water is always a fun challenge, and I think the way the shadows fall across the snow here is quite effective. This painting is for sale, so please contact me if you would like more information about buying it.
